UNITING CHAMPIONS

PRESERVING TRADITION

our history

The TKA has been a long-standing organization that evolved from Indiana’s grassroots martial arts community. In the 1960’s U.S. servicemen returned from Okinawa along with Japanese masters relocating to the United States. Many of these individuals called Central Indiana home, opened schools, and began hosting competitions.

Over the next 30 years, Indiana earned a reputation for its fighters and kata practitioners and was widely regarded as a hotbed for producing karate legends. During this time David Foreman (founder of the TKA) was part of a pioneering team that laid the foundation for what karate tournaments would become. This group worked together to transition Indiana karate from informal, localized events to professional, point-based ranking systems that became the engine for fostering community growth and forging state champions. The TKA was one of several organizations born from these efforts.

Since its foundation the TKA has hosted numerous tournaments, created a community for dozens of martial arts schools, and impacted countless lives across the Midwest – and beyond.  Today, the TKA continues to focus on traditional values, character development and self-discipline while ensuring martial artists have healthy competition and a circuit to test their skills, build character, and maintain the “Indiana reputation” for excellence.
